crafts with kiddos: flashcards

This past weekend I was lucky enough to be able to spend some time with Thing 1 and Thing 2. I am happy to report that Thing 1 loves the cd I made for him. He particularly likes Sleepyhead by Passion Pit. He also car-dances like a real weirdo. Oh, I’m so proud.

After we got back to my parents’ house I wanted to entertain them until it was time for dinner. They’re both in school now and they seem to like to learn (they better!), so I thought we’d do a spelling project.

You need index cards, glue (I prefer glue sticks), magazines, a hole-punch and some string.

flash cards

1. Have your kiddos cut pictures out of the magazines. If they’re about the age of Things 1 and 2, then they know how to spell some words, sort of think they know how to spell others and are completely blank on a lot. I encouraged them to find pictures of things they didn’t already know how to spell, but it’s good to have a mix of easy and hard ones for the ole self-confidence.

2. Glue your pictures to index cards and write the words on the back. Just writing the words on the flashcards is a learning opportunity.

3. Punch a hole in the top and tie them together with string or ribbon. Now they’re good to go and you can take them anywhere. They’ll be learnin’ all over the place!
